Who rhinoplasty is for
Rhinoplasty reshapes the nose to change its size, profile, tip shape, width, or the angle between nose and lip. Patients seek it for a dorsal hump, a bulbous or drooping tip, a wide bridge, asymmetry, or a nose that simply feels out of balance with the rest of the face. It is one of the most requested cosmetic operations in medical tourism, and Turkey in particular has become a high-volume hub for it.
It is also one of the most technically demanding. The nose is a small structure where millimetres matter and where skin, cartilage, and bone all respond differently. Because of that, surgeon experience with this specific operation matters more here than for almost any other cosmetic procedure.
Open vs closed, and other variations
There are two main approaches. In closed rhinoplasty all incisions sit inside the nostrils, leaving no external scar and usually less swelling; it suits more limited reshaping. In open rhinoplasty the surgeon adds a tiny incision across the columella — the strip of skin between the nostrils — to lift the skin and see the framework directly, which gives more control for complex tip work and revisions. The scar is small and typically fades well.
You may also hear about preservation rhinoplasty, which keeps more of the natural dorsum rather than removing and rebuilding it, and ultrasonic (piezo) techniques that shape bone with sound waves to reduce bruising. None of these is universally "best" — the right choice depends on your nose and your goal, which is why a surgeon who works in several techniques is reassuring.
What it costs and what's included
Rhinoplasty is highly variable in price. In established medical-tourism hubs, primary rhinoplasty packages typically fall in a broad band of roughly 2,500 to 5,000 euros, while higher figures apply in high-cost markets or for complex revision cases. Packages usually include the surgeon, anaesthesia, the facility, one or two hospital nights, and follow-up.
Confirm whether the quote covers a possible revision, the nasal splint and dressings, and medication. Revision rhinoplasty — correcting an earlier operation — is genuinely harder and is priced accordingly, so do not expect primary-surgery rates for it.
Choosing a rhinoplasty surgeon
Ask specifically how many rhinoplasties the surgeon performs each year and to see before-and-after photos of noses similar to yours, ideally from several angles and at least a year out, since the result keeps refining for months. A surgeon who only shows freshly post-operative photos is hiding the part that matters.
Confirm board certification in plastic surgery or facial plastic surgery (otolaryngology), and that the facility carries JCI, TEMOS, or ISO accreditation. If you also have breathing problems, look for a surgeon comfortable with functional work so structure and airway are addressed together rather than appearance alone.
Recovery and timeline
Expect a splint on the nose for about a week, with bruising and swelling around the eyes that is usually most visible for the first week to ten days. Most people feel presentable enough to fly home after seven to ten days, once the splint is off and the surgeon clears you.
The nose keeps changing for far longer than people expect. Most swelling resolves within a few weeks, but the tip in particular can take a full year — sometimes longer in thick-skinned noses — to reach its final, refined shape. Patience is part of the procedure.
Risks and revisions
Beyond the general surgical risks of bleeding, infection, and anaesthesia, rhinoplasty has its own: persistent asymmetry, a result that does not match expectations, breathing changes, and small irregularities you can feel or see as swelling settles. A meaningful share of rhinoplasties — even good ones — eventually have a minor revision, which is normal rather than a red flag.
Because revision is harder than primary surgery, the clinic's policy matters. Ask before booking what the revision window and cost are, and how the surgeon would coordinate with a specialist at home if a problem appeared after you had travelled back.
