What regenerative medicine actually means
Regenerative medicine is a broad field that aims to repair, replace or stimulate the body's own tissues rather than simply managing symptoms. In practice it covers several quite different treatments, from injecting a concentrate of your own blood platelets into a sore joint, to infusing laboratory-expanded cells, to using cell-derived particles called exosomes. They share a common idea — encouraging healing — but the science behind each one is at a very different stage.
This is an area where it is easy to be oversold. Some regenerative treatments, such as platelet-rich plasma for certain tendon and joint problems, have a reasonable and growing evidence base. Others, particularly many systemic stem cell infusions marketed for chronic or incurable diseases, remain experimental and are not approved by major regulators for those uses. A responsible clinic will tell you honestly which category your proposed treatment falls into.

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy is the simplest and best-established. A small amount of your blood is spun in a centrifuge to concentrate platelets and growth factors, which are then injected into the target area. It is widely used in orthopaedics, dermatology and hair restoration.
Exosome therapy uses tiny vesicles released by cells, which carry signalling molecules thought to drive some of the effects once attributed to stem cells themselves. It is newer and less regulated, and quality control varies enormously between providers. Ozone therapy is a separate approach that introduces a measured ozone-oxygen mixture into the body; it has a long history in some countries but a contested evidence base. Costs vary more in this category than almost any other in medical tourism, because the treatments themselves are so different. A single PRP session is usually one of the most affordable regenerative options, while a course of laboratory-expanded stem cell infusions can run into the high thousands of euros and is sometimes packaged as a multi-day or multi-session programme.
A reputable clinic should give you an itemised quote: the treatment itself, any imaging or diagnostics, laboratory processing, the number of sessions, and follow-up. Be wary of large lump-sum packages for vaguely defined 'cell therapy' aimed at chronic disease, especially when the marketing leans on testimonials rather than published outcomes.
Because many of these treatments are considered experimental, they are rarely reimbursed by insurance for non-approved indications. Treat any price as out-of-pocket and weigh it against the strength of the evidence for your specific condition, not against the hope being sold.
How to choose a clinic and judge the claims
Start with accreditation and credentials. Look for internationally recognised standards such as JCI, TEMOS or ISO certification, and confirm that the treating clinician is a board-certified specialist relevant to your problem — an orthopaedic surgeon for a joint, a dermatologist for skin or hair. Ask where cells or biological products are processed and whether that laboratory is licensed and quality-controlled.
Then interrogate the claims. Ask directly: is this treatment approved by a major regulator for my condition, or is it experimental? What does the published evidence show for patients like me, and what is the realistic best case? A trustworthy provider will not promise cures, will discuss risks, and will document informed consent properly.
Finally, insist on continuity of care. You should leave with clear records, a named contact and a plan for follow-up with your doctors at home. Be sceptical of clinics that discourage you from involving your usual physicians.
Recovery, follow-up and managing expectations
For injection-based regenerative treatments such as PRP, most people return to normal activity within a few days, with some local soreness or swelling at the injection site. Benefits, where they occur, tend to build gradually over weeks rather than appearing immediately, and a course of sessions is often recommended.
For cell or exosome infusions, the procedure itself is usually short, but the meaningful question is not recovery time — it is whether there is any durable benefit, and that is exactly where evidence is weakest for many advertised uses. Set expectations conservatively and agree in advance how success will be measured.
Whatever the treatment, plan your follow-up before you travel. Keep your home medical team informed, retain all documentation, and report any unexpected symptoms promptly.
