Dental Treatment — what you should know in 2026

A plain-English overview of the dental procedures patients travel for, from single implants to a full smile makeover, and how to choose the right one.

Written by our medical board, reviewed quarterlyUpdated 21 January 19709 min read

Why patients travel for dental care

Dental work is one of the most common reasons people cross borders for treatment. The reason is simple: in many high-cost healthcare markets, routine restorative dentistry is only partly covered by insurance or not covered at all, and the out-of-pocket price for implants, crowns or a full-mouth rehabilitation can run into many thousands. The same work performed in established medical-tourism hubs is often a fraction of the price, even after flights and a few nights of accommodation are added.

The second reason is timing. A patient who needs several implants placed, healed and restored may face months of waiting and multiple separate appointments at home. A well-run clinic abroad can compress diagnostics, surgery and provisional restorations into a single planned trip, with the final restorations either fitted before departure or shipped and seated by a local dentist later.

Dental tourism suits people who need predictable, well-defined procedures: implants, veneers, crowns, bridges, orthodontics or whitening. It suits less well anyone in the middle of complex, unstable disease that needs ongoing local monitoring. The honest test is whether the work can be planned in advance from records and completed in one or two trips.

The procedures this category covers

Dental treatment is a broad area, and the right answer depends entirely on what is wrong and what you want. Restorative and surgical work includes dental implants, the full-arch All-on-4 and All-on-6 systems, dental bridges, dentures, root canal treatment, dental fillings, tooth extraction, wisdom tooth removal and sinus lift surgery that prepares the upper jaw for implants.

Cosmetic and corrective work includes dental veneers, dental crowns, zirconium crowns, teeth whitening, gum contouring and the marketing package often sold as a Hollywood Smile. Alignment is handled by orthodontic braces and clear aligners.

Many real treatment plans combine several of these. A patient who has lost back teeth and dislikes the colour of the front ones might need implants plus veneers; someone seeking a full-arch replacement chooses between All-on-4, All-on-6 and conventional implant-supported dentures. The skill of a good clinic is not selling the biggest package but matching the smallest intervention that solves the problem.

What treatment typically costs

Prices vary by country, materials and case complexity, so treat any figure as a broad guide rather than a quote. As a rule of thumb in popular dental-tourism destinations, a single titanium implant with abutment and crown typically falls in the low four figures in euros, a porcelain or zirconium crown is usually a few hundred euros, and veneers are priced per tooth in a similar band. Full-arch solutions such as All-on-4 are quoted per arch and run into several thousand euros depending on the number of implants and the final material.

What a price should include matters more than the headline number. A transparent plan covers consultation, 3D imaging (CBCT), the surgical and laboratory work, provisional restorations where needed, and follow-up. Be cautious of quotes that look unusually low and then add imaging, abutments, bone grafting or the final crown as separate line items.

Because implants and full-arch work require healing time, the final restorations may be fitted on a second visit. Factor two trips, or a longer single stay, into both your budget and your calendar.

How to choose a clinic and dentist

Accreditation is the first filter. Look for internationally recognised standards such as JCI, TEMOS or ISO certification at the facility level, and confirm that the treating dentist is board-certified or registered with the national dental authority, with verifiable training in the specific work you need. Implantology, prosthodontics and orthodontics are distinct disciplines, and you want a clinician who does your procedure routinely.

Ask to see the diagnostic basis for your plan. A serious clinic works from a recent panoramic X-ray or CBCT scan and gives you a written treatment plan that names materials, implant brands and the number of visits. Stock photos of perfect smiles are marketing; case photos of patients with situations like yours, plus a clear explanation of the laboratory and warranty, are evidence.

Finally, plan for continuity. Confirm what happens if a crown debonds or an implant needs attention after you fly home, who you contact, what the warranty covers, and whether your home dentist can act on the clinic's records. Good clinics expect these questions and answer them in writing.

Recovery and timelines

Recovery depends heavily on the procedure. Whitening, fillings, simple crowns and veneers involve little or no downtime and can often be completed within a few days. Routine extractions and root canals heal within a week or two. Surgical work such as implant placement, sinus lift or wisdom tooth removal involves swelling and mild discomfort for several days, with full bone integration of implants taking three to six months before final loading.

For implant and full-arch cases this is why a single trip rarely delivers the finished result. A common pattern is a first visit for surgery and provisional teeth, a healing period at home, and a second visit to fit the permanent restorations. Some immediate-load protocols place a fixed temporary bridge on the day of surgery, but the definitive prosthesis still follows months later.

Orthodontic treatment is the outlier: braces or clear aligners run over months to a couple of years, managed mostly remotely with occasional in-person reviews, so the travel pattern is different again.

Risks and what if something goes wrong

Dentistry is safe and routine, but it is still clinical care with real risks. General categories include infection, nerve irritation or injury (particularly with lower wisdom teeth and implants near the inferior alveolar nerve), sinus complications with upper implants and sinus lifts, implant failure or non-integration, and aesthetic disappointment when veneers or crowns are over-prepared or poorly colour-matched. Rushed full-mouth makeovers carry the most regret when healthy teeth are aggressively reduced for cosmetic reasons.

The way to reduce these risks is unglamorous: accurate diagnostics, an experienced clinician, conservative treatment planning and realistic expectations. Be wary of any clinic that promises a complete transformation in two or three days regardless of the underlying problem.

If a problem appears after you return home, contact the treating clinic first; reputable providers offer warranties and remote review, and many maintain partner networks. Keep all records, X-rays and the implant or material passport so a local dentist can intervene safely if needed.

Frequently asked

Is dental treatment abroad safe?

It can be very safe when you choose an accredited clinic with board-certified dentists and proper diagnostics. Safety comes from the standard of the specific clinic, not the country, so verification matters more than the destination.

How much can I realistically save?

Savings of 50 to 70 percent versus high-cost markets are common for implants, crowns and full-arch work, even after travel. Always compare like-for-like, including materials and follow-up, rather than headline prices.

How many trips will I need?

Cosmetic work such as veneers, whitening and many crowns can be done in one trip of a few days. Implants and full-arch cases usually need two visits because the bone must heal before final restorations are fitted.

What happens if a crown or implant fails after I get home?

Reputable clinics provide a written warranty and remote follow-up, and can often arrange repair on a return visit or through a partner dentist. Keep your records and material passports so a local dentist can help if needed.

Does insurance cover treatment performed abroad?

Most routine and cosmetic dentistry is not reimbursed even at home, and coverage abroad is rare. Check your policy before travelling and assume you are paying out of pocket unless told otherwise in writing.

Will the procedure hurt?

Treatment is performed under local anaesthetic, so the procedure itself is usually painless. Mild soreness or swelling for a few days is normal after extractions, implants or surgery and is managed with simple pain relief.
