What a CT scan is and when it's used
Computed tomography uses X-rays taken from many angles and combines them by computer into detailed cross-sectional images of the body. It is fast, widely available, and excellent for visualising bone, the lungs, blood vessels and acute problems such as bleeding or injury, which makes it a workhorse of both emergency and planned imaging.
People book a CT to investigate a specific concern, to characterise a finding from another test, or as part of a screening programme — for example a low-dose chest CT for lung cancer screening in smokers, or a coronary calcium score in a cardiac check-up. Abroad, a CT scan is often cheaper and quicker to arrange than privately at home, a common reason patients travel for it.
CT is not always the right tool. For soft tissues such as the brain, spine and joints an MRI usually gives more detail, and for some questions an ultrasound avoids radiation altogether. Because CT uses X-rays, the choice should weigh what the scan will show against the small radiation exposure, ideally with a doctor's input.
How the scan works and the radiation question
During a CT scan you lie on a table that moves through a ring-shaped scanner. The scan itself is very quick — often a matter of seconds to a few minutes — and you may be asked to hold your breath briefly. Some scans use an injected contrast agent to highlight blood vessels or organs, which can cause a brief warm sensation but is generally well tolerated after a check of kidney function and allergies.
Unlike MRI, CT does use ionising radiation. For a single scan the dose is small and the benefit of an accurate diagnosis usually far outweighs the very low associated risk. Modern scanners and low-dose protocols have reduced exposure considerably, and reputable centres tailor the dose to the question being asked.
The practical implication is that CT should be used purposefully rather than casually repeated. This is why routine whole-body CT screening of healthy people without a specific indication is generally discouraged: the cumulative radiation and the risk of incidental findings can outweigh the benefit. A targeted CT for a clear reason is a different matter.
What it costs
A CT scan is moderately priced. A single-region scan abroad typically falls in the low-to-mid hundreds of euros, often below private rates in higher-cost home markets, with contrast-enhanced or multi-region scans costing more. Specialised studies such as a CT coronary angiogram sit at the higher end.
The price should make clear whether it includes a radiologist's report and any contrast that may be needed. The report is the essential part — a CT image only becomes useful once an experienced radiologist has interpreted it — so confirm that a written report by a qualified specialist is part of the fee.
Check what you take away: a good centre provides the written report plus the raw images, on disc or via a secure portal, so your own doctor can review them. Imaging without an accessible report and images offers little once you are home.
Choosing an accredited imaging centre
The quality of a CT depends on the scanner, the dose protocol and the radiologist who reads it. Look for centres with international accreditation such as JCI or TEMOS, modern multi-slice scanners, and explicit use of low-dose protocols, which signal that the unit takes radiation seriously.
Ask who will interpret your scan and their qualifications: a board-certified radiologist with relevant subspecialty experience should read the images and issue a clear written report in English. A reputable centre answers these questions readily and does not push unnecessary repeat scans that add radiation without benefit.
Safety screening before contrast — checking kidney function, allergies and pregnancy — is another marker of a careful centre. Attention to dose and safety is as important as the technology, because with CT the goal is to get the answer with the least exposure.
After the scan: results and follow-up
A CT scan needs no recovery — you can resume normal activity immediately and usually travel home the same day. If contrast was used, you may be advised to drink extra fluids to help clear it, but most people have no restrictions afterwards.
The radiologist's report typically follows within a day or two, describing what the images show and flagging anything that needs attention. Because CT is detailed, it can reveal incidental findings — small, common variations that are harmless but appear precisely because the scan is so sensitive — and a good report distinguishes these from findings that matter.
Share the report and raw images with your own doctor, who can interpret them alongside your history and other tests. A CT answers a focused question; deciding what to do with the answer is best handled by the team responsible for your continuing care.
