Stay & travel
From inquiry to your 12-month review
Most patients fly home on day 3 or 4. Office work with a hat is fine after day 10; client-facing work most patients delay until day 14. Final result settles between months 9 and 12.
Diagnosis and planning
Disease assessment and donor matching or stem cell collection are arranged.
Stem cell collection
Cells are harvested from the patient or a matched donor and stored.
Conditioning
High-dose chemotherapy, sometimes with radiotherapy, clears the diseased marrow.
Transplant infusion
The healthy stem cells are infused through a vein, similar to a transfusion.
Engraftment and isolation
Counts are very low for weeks while the new cells engraft, requiring protective isolation.
Prolonged monitoring
Infection, rejection and graft-versus-host effects are watched closely over months.
Long-term follow-up
Immune recovery and medication are monitored well beyond discharge.

Is the transplant itself a big operation?
No, the cells are given through a drip; the intensive part is the conditioning treatment and the recovery while counts rebuild.
What is graft-versus-host disease?
In donor transplants the new immune cells can attack the recipient's tissues; this is monitored and treated when it occurs.
How long is recovery?
Hospital stays often run several weeks, with immune recovery and monitoring continuing for many months.
