There is some choice in how much foreskin is removed — a tighter or looser result — and this is worth discussing in advance, as is whether the frenulum is preserved or divided. These details affect the cosmetic outcome that matters to many patients.
In very young children the techniques and devices differ and the operation is quicker, but the principles of clean technique, good anaesthesia or analgesia, and careful aftercare are the same. Whatever the method, the operation itself is short and well-established.

Circumcision is one of the more affordable procedures patients travel for. A package typically covers the surgeon, the anaesthesia, the day-case facility, dressings and a follow-up check before you fly home. Because it is short and rarely needs an overnight stay, costs are modest.

Choosing a clinic
Even though circumcision is routine, technique affects the cosmetic result and comfort, so choose a board-certified urologist or surgeon who performs it regularly. Ask to discuss how much foreskin will be removed and whether you can express a preference for a tighter or looser result.
Prefer a properly equipped clinic or hospital with recognised accreditation such as JCI, TEMOS or ISO 9001, which signals reliable sterilisation and anaesthesia standards. For a child, confirm the team is experienced in paediatric anaesthesia and aftercare.
Because this is also performed for religious and cultural reasons, many clinics offer it in a respectful, planned way; even so, the same medical standards on hygiene, anaesthesia and follow-up should apply. Be wary of very high-volume, low-cost settings that cut corners on these.
Recovery and timeline
Recovery is usually straightforward. Swelling, bruising and tenderness are normal for the first one to two weeks, and the area can look quite swollen before it settles. Most adults take a few days off work and avoid strenuous activity, cycling and heavy lifting for around two to four weeks.
You should avoid sexual activity, including masturbation, for roughly four to six weeks to let healing complete, and your surgeon will give specific guidance. Loose clothing, good hygiene and keeping the area dry where advised all help. Dissolvable stitches typically fall away over a couple of weeks.
You can usually fly home within a few days. Most men find the result settles cosmetically over several weeks as swelling resolves, and full healing of the deeper tissues continues for a couple of months.
Risks and what to watch for
Circumcision is low-risk but, like any operation, not risk-free. The common issues are bleeding, infection, swelling and, occasionally, a result that is more or less tight than the patient hoped. Rarely there can be a sensitivity change or a need for a minor revision if too much or too little skin was removed.
Most complications are minor and settle with simple care. Warning signs that need attention include increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, a fever or bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure.
Before travelling, agree what the clinic will do if a problem appears after you fly home, and keep your home doctor informed so they can manage simple aftercare.
