When to go to a hospital

Emergency guidance: Know when symptoms require immediate hospital care.

Emergency Guidance

If you believe you are experiencing a medical emergency, call local emergency services immediately. Do not wait.

Go to the Emergency Room Immediately If You Experience:

Breathing Problems

  • Severe shortness of breath
  • Difficulty breathing while lying down
  • Choking sensation
  • Blue lips or fingertips

Cardiac Symptoms

  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Pain radiating to arm, jaw, or back
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Feeling of impending doom

Neurological Signs

  • Sudden severe headache
  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Difficulty speaking
  • One-sided weakness
  • Vision changes
  • Loss of consciousness

Severe Bleeding

  • Bleeding that won't stop with pressure
  • Bleeding through bandages
  • Blood in urine, stool, or vomit

Signs of Serious Infection

  • Very high fever (over 39°C/102°F)
  • Chills and shaking
  • Red streaks spreading from wound
  • Rapid heart rate with fever

If possible, bring:

  • Your medical documents and procedure records
  • List of current medications
  • Clinic contact information
  • Insurance information

  3. Your current medications
  4. When symptoms started
  5. Any allergies
