Hidden costs to ask about
Compression garments. These are clinically required rather than optional, and are worn for weeks. The NHS describes garments after liposuction being "worn constantly for several weeks", and chest surgery follows similar logic.
Time away from work. Chest surgery limits lifting and physical activity for a period your surgeon will set. If your job is physical, factor in the unpaid days.
The nights before you fly. The NHS advises avoiding flights "5 to 7 days after procedures such as breast surgery and liposuction" because of clot risk. The FCDO adds that you should board only when you are fit to fly.
Revision travel. If the result needs adjusting, going back to your surgeon means paying to travel again. BAPRAS points out that a return trip "could add hundreds of pounds as well as involve significant time away from work".
Insurance and repatriation. Standard travel insurance does not normally cover you when you travelled for elective surgery. Gov.uk guidance for patients in hospital abroad states that without cover for repatriation, "you'll have to arrange and pay for it yourself".
The NHS is not a free repair service. BAPRAS states the NHS will always look after you in a life-threatening emergency but "will usually refuse treatment for less serious complications or bad outcomes following cosmetic surgery". BAAPS is equally direct: go back to the clinic abroad, or pay for corrections in the UK.
Price alone is a poor guide, and there is evidence for that. A BAAPS study published in November 2024, covering 103 patients referred to a UK unit over a decade, found 66% would not make the same decision again and 83% had chosen primarily on lower cost. Notably, 57% had paid under £5,000 in total including surgery, travel and accommodation.
